Jakob Rammer studied International Development at the University of Vienna with a focus on political, economic, and sociological aspects. As part of his pre-doctoral studies, he is conducting research on contested socio-ecological transformation and related conflicts with a regional focus on Latin America - in particular Chile and Colombia.

Theoretically, he draws on approaches from critical political economy, critical state theory, and political ecology.

About his field research

In 2024, Jakob Rammer co-authored a book chapter "Greening the EU economy at the expense of other world regions? Tracing the EU's quest for hydrogen in Chile.“ His master's thesis ”Green capitalism or social and ecological justice? Analysing contested green hydrogen developments in Chile" was published by the Austrian Research Foundation for International Development (ÖFSE) in the fall of 2025 as an outstanding piece of research.

In addition to contested hydrogen policies, he examines the relationship between technology, social conflicts, and transformation in (green) capitalism from a political-economic and political ecology perspective.

In addition to Chile, he also conducts research on conflicts surrounding copper mining in Colombia and possible transformative alternatives.
