Abstract:
This ie.talk critically reviews the traditional concept of citizenship, as the rights and duties of nation-citizen. This traditional reduced concept overlooks the role of global, national, and local power asymmetries, identity politics, and neoliberal capitalism in depriving people from a meaningful and just participation in the political, social, and economic systems that shape their lives. In the conflict context this deprivation has been aggravated with the dismantling of the functions of developmental state and the widespread of violence and marginalisation to seize power and resources.
The ie.talk is going to discuss the results of a comprehensive field work in Syria that adopted a transdisciplinary participatory approach using quantitative and qualitative methods. The research developed a framework based on critical theory, critical political economy, and postcolonialism, to explore a concept of citizenship that is conscious of power structures and exclusionary socioeconomic policies. Furthermore, the emancipatory citizenship is a concept that can explore the potential political and social transformation that transcend the conflict foundations and invest in justice and solidarity within the nation borders and beyond.
